How to recycle your e-waste
Electronics play a major part in our lives, both at work and at home. But what happens when that technology is upgraded, becomes obsolete, or stops just working? Many of these items contain hazardous materials, so if they end up in the trash, electronics can potentially harm the environment. Millions of tons of e-waste are created each year in the US, and only 12% of that is recycled. We can all be part of that solution by taking a few simple steps:
Purchase products that can be upgraded or repaired. This can extend their overall life and limit e-waste before it is generated.
Donate or sell electronics when it comes time to replace them. Products that seem obsolete can have a productive second life ahead of them.
Many manufacturers have free mail-back programs in place to recycle old electronics. This can be a great solution, especially for cell phones, computers, and other common consumer items.
Participate in an electronic waste recycling program to divert them from a landfill. Recyclers dismantle the products and many of the components can be processed and returned to productive use.
